Constructor: Brad Wiegmann

Relative issue: Easy (very) (7:42 ... if that's not my report Sunday time, it's shut)

THEME: "Mother's Day Concert" — songs clued as though they had to do with giving beginning. Looks like they are in some more or less order, finishing with beginning (?):

Theme solutions:

"I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU" (24A: Mom's comment to her kid all the way through prenatal bonding? [Frank Sinatra, 1954])"CARRY THAT WEIGHT" (30A: What Mom is obligated to do as her due date approaches? [The Beatles, 1969])"HURTS SO GOOD" (49A: Mom's reaction to her first mild contractions? [John Cougar, 1982])"PUSH IT" (54A: Midwife's advice to Mom within the supply room? [Salt-N-Pepa, 1987])"SCREAM" (83A: Mom's reaction as delivery attracts nearer? [Usher, 2012])"I'M COMING OUT" (85A: Child's response to Mom's actions? [Diana Ross, 1980])"BABY ONE MORE TIME" (103A: Nurse's statement after Mom delivers the primary twin? [Britney Spears, 1998])"THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" (112A: Doctor's remark after Mom delivers the second twin? [The Who, 1965])Word of the Day: LORI McKenna (19A: Country singer McKenna) — Lorraine "Lori" McKenna (née Giroux; born December 22, 1968) is an American folks, Americana, and nation track singer, songwriter, and performer. In 2016, she was once nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and gained Best Country Song for co-writing the hit single "Girl Crush" carried out via Little Big Town. In 2017, she once more gained Best Country Song at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for writing "Humble and Kind" carried out via Tim McGraw. McKenna along side Lady Gaga, Natalie Hemby and Hillary Lindsey wrote the second unmarried off the soundtrack to the 2018 film A Star Is Born known as "Always Remember Us This Way." McKenna performed backing vocals along with Lindsey and Hemby, and the song received a nomination for Song of the Year at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. (wikipedia)

Let me preface my preliminary remarks via announcing that I'm positive that they're a minimum of slightly unfair. But it is a gut-level feeling that I had fixing this thing, right from the primary themer that I were given ("HURTS SO GOOD"), and that's: I discovered all of it a bit creepy. There's simply something a couple of guy creating a puzzle and turning those very ... physical, embodied, steadily painful reports into haha tune jokes. I feel it was the competitive focus on the actual fact of giving delivery that weirded me out. I mean, giving start, incredible, no problems with all kinds of specifics related to the act. It's the unusual cutesiness of all of it. I in reality do think that having "HURTS SO GOOD" being the first themer I encountered actually just ruined the whole experience. The idea of contractions being a kind of sadomasochistic experience... it simply made my skin move slowly a bit of. The rest of the themers don't seem to be nearly as off-putting to me. And I'm 100% sure that if the constructor had been a girl, I do not need been *as* get rid of as I was. But I almost certainly nonetheless would've been. A bit. When I recall to mind Mother's Day, I do not in point of fact think of the actual act of giving start. I mean, it is clearly vital, but it's hardly ever on the middle of what makes a mother a mom. Anyway, I completely admit that my aversion to this whole theme could be very possibly extremely idiosyncratic and personal. Some of these themers are roughly cute, I suppose. But you realize what mom truly needs for Mother's Day? A girl constructor.

[embedded content material] One thing more is that the songs are all very outdated. The most recent track is 23 years outdated. I imply, proper in my wheelhouse, thanks very a lot, but if I'm under 40 (and critically, so much and quite a lot of solvers are), that is gonna feel a bit of musty. I'm satisfied for the puzzle to go previous, but possibly widen the variability a bit of. Oh, whoops, I didn't even see that 2012 Usher tune there ("SCREAM"). I have no idea what music this is. I do know the Michael / Janet Jackson tune "SCREAM," but now not the Usher one. I guess Usher makes things a bit extra recent. But handiest simply.

I actually thought I used to be sputtering my approach via this, so used to be utterly stunned to peer my extremely speedy (for me) time on the finish. There were So Many "?" clues that I in fact yelled on the puzzle mid-solve. "Stop!" or "Uggggh!" or something like this is almost definitely what I yelled. But my reaction on having a look at what gave the look of the fifth "?" clue in a row used to be visceral. Excluding themers (that have "?" clues via design, so no foul there), I count thirteen (!?) "?" clues. Maybe there are more—I simply did a quick scan and sometimes my eyes fail me. But that seems like a lot. And there are so much in a brief space. 60- 66- 70- 72- 79- and 84-Down are *all* "?" clues. And sure sufficient, the only two puts I were given discernibly stuck these days had "?" clues proper in the course of them. First, PUPAE, oof (56A: Wanna-bees, e.g.?). Because ... they wanna be ... bees? Do they, even though? Wannabes are decidedly Not the item they are pretending / aspiring to be(e). Whereas PUPAE do, if truth be told, turn into bees, so ... I dunno about the wordplay there. And that solution crossed TOETAPS, which just wasn't registering as a factor in my mind (43D: Keeps the beat with one's foot). The different tough spot concerned 66D: Site of offshore banks? (ISLETS). What shore are they "off" of? The mainland? Because "banks" *are* shores. Also, "banks" are used for rivers and lakes most often, no longer seas or oceans. The "?" is doing a Lot of work in this clue. So ISLETS, subsequent to PARA (72D: Olympic athlete category) (is not that a shortening? why does not the clue indicate shortening?) crossing the execrable AT A TROT actually bogged me down. But, again, it sounds as if did not bog me down too much, as a result of I in reality flew via this one. I favored the long Downs in the NW and SE corners. Those are forged. And I appreciated how fast I went. Everything else was once OK. Your taste might range (considerably).

Not much wishes explaining as of late, does it? 5D: Beginning that ends up in sum? (COGITO) refers to the word "COGITO ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). ERS are [Places to take breaks, for brief?] as a result of you are taking breaks (i.e. damaged frame portions) there. The other "?" clues all appear pretty clear.

Happy Mothers Day to all who mom.

Signed, Rex Parker, King of CrossWorld

P.S. my mother rules :)

P.P.S. from social media ... I'm it sounds as if now not the one person who recoiled from this theme, at least a little:
