In 1858, Cyprian Clamorgan wrote a brief but immensely readable book entitled The Colored Aristocracy of St. Louis. The grandson of a white voyageur and a mulatto woman, he was himself a member of the "colored aristocracy." Bob Buckingham studies that a fiddling preacher of his aquaintance named Buck Rife (at the beginning from the Beckley WV house) calls the track "Young Man Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn (The)" and gave that he had it as an adolescent studying clawhammer banjo from an uncle.
