A subduction zone is the greatest crash scene on Earth. These limitations mark the collision between two of the planet's tectonic plates. The plates are items of crust that slowly transfer throughout the planet's floor over hundreds of thousands of years.

Where two tectonic plates meet at a subduction zone, one bends and slides underneath the other, curving down into the mantle. (The mantle is the warmer layer beneath the crust.) 

Tectonic plates can transport each continental crust and oceanic crust, or they could also be product of just one more or less crust. Oceanic crust is denser than continental crust. At a subduction zone, the oceanic crust usually sinks into the mantle underneath lighter continental crust. (Sometimes, oceanic crust might grow so previous and that dense that it collapses and spontaneously bureaucracy a subduction zone, scientists think.)

Called the "Ring of Fire," those subduction zones are responsible for the global's biggest earthquakes, the most terrible tsunamis and a few of the worst volcanic eruptions.

Earthquakes

Shoving two large slices of Earth's crust together is like rubbing two items of sandpaper towards each and every other. These fluids, reminiscent of seawater and carbon dioxide, rise into the higher plate and can partly soften the overlying crust, forming magma. And magma (molten rock) steadily way volcanoes.
